About
Environment Europe is a think tank based in Oxford, UK. Environment Europe is an organisation with a sustainability focus, which acts as a catalyst of change for sustainable development across Europe through interdisciplinary research, organisation of international conferences, interactive workshops, publications programme and consultancy. Their initiatives and projects are devoted to interdisciplinary systems analysis for sustainable development and comprise the following dimensions:
Countries:
- macro sustainability assessment for countries (this project was started in 2005 and led to the development of the new methodology based on the application of multi-criteria decision
- aid tools for dynamic sustainability assessment);
- environmentally extended input-output analysis (a new method of coupling input-output analysis with multi-criteria decision aid was developed as a result, which will help governments to establish investment priorities for sustainable development);
Regions:
- sustainable cities (two international workshops focused on London and St Petersburg were carried out in 2006-2007, which resulted in the publication of a special issue of the * International Journal of Sustainable Development and a book);
- sustainable waste management (have designed of new models for regional planning focused on sustainable waste management);
- sustainable energy (comparative analysis of decision support tools with applications to renewables has been carried out)
- assessment of ecosystems and biodiversity (Environment Europe completed a project for International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) focused on multi-criteria assessment of ecosystems and biodiversity)
Corporations:
- corporate sustainability reports according to GRI guidelines
- sustainability assessment for companies
- Publications that resulted from these activities could be seen in the Wikiprogress Bibliography and on the Environment Europe website

- Ecological Economics: Sustainability in Practice' by Shmelev, Stanislav. Springer (2011), proposes new methods and tools for the assessment of progress towards sustainability based on multi-criteria methods.
In his book Environment Europe's Dr Stanislav Shmelev, currently a Senior Visiting Research Associate at the School of Geography and the Environment of the University of Oxford and Associate at 4CMR, University of Cambridge, opens with an outline of a big-picture vision of economy-environment interactions using the ideas of industrial ecology.
Introducing the potential of the multi-criteria decision aid tools for sustainable development analysis, Dr Shmelev moves on to apply these methods for the assessment of sustainability at the macro scale. Chapters of the book add to the structural economic analysis of the sustainability reform and propose a method where environmentally-extended input-output analysis is coupled with multi-criteria decision aid. According to Dr Shmelev, such creative methodological synthesis allows one to reach new understanding of the meaning of sustainability and create a new basis for sustainability policy design.
In addition to the theoretical basis for new sustainability economics, the book explores a whole range of case studies where the methods of ecological economics have been applied by the author. Such case studies comprise sustainable cities, renewable energy systems, sustainable waste management, assessment of ecosystems and biodiversity, and issues of corporate sustainability.
