About
The Young Foundation was formed in 2005 "to re-energise the powerful combination of research and action demonstrated by Michael Young." [1] Michael Young helped to shape the United Kingdom' new welfare state after 1945 and he established the Institute of community Studies as a base for research and action. His ideas about social issues were very influencal, including urban planning (leading the movement away from power blocks), education (leading thinking about how to radically widen access) and poverty, as well as, public and consumer empowerment both in private markets and in public services.
Michael Young "had an enormous impact on the day-to-day lives of the millions of people who use them and on how we think about our society. Over the next fifty years the Young Foundation hopes to have an equally profound impact." [2]
The Young Foundation has over 60 staff members and offices in London, Birmingham (United Kingdom) New York (United States) and Paris (France). The foundation aims to bring together insights, innovation and entrepreneurship to deal with issues around social needs. The work covers health, ageing, education, community, housing, justice, youth leadership, creative uses of the web and wellbeing. Sucess is seen in projects such as the Open University, the School for Social Entrepreneurs and Healthline (the precursor of NHS Direct).
