Definition and more
The International Standard Classification of Education (ISCED) classifies primary education or first stage of basic education as Level 1 (ISCED 1) on their six-level scale. Programmes on ISCED 1 are typically "designed on a unit or project basis to give students a sound basic education in reading, writing and mathematics along with an elementary understanding of other subjects. The core of this level consists of education provided for children, the customary or legal age of entrance being not younger than five years or older than seven years. The primary education takes typically six years of full-time schooling.
The second of the Millennium Development Goals is to achieve universal primary education for both girls and boys by 2015.
Aims of primary education
Primary education has the goal to provide children and adults attending primary school with life skills such as reading and mathematical literacy. Furthermore, in relation with the rise of microfinance, financial literacy has become to be seen as an important aspect of education.
Financial literacy
The OECD has developed the International Gateway for Financial Education (IFGE) as part of its OECD Project on Financial Education. The PISA 2012 will test 15 year-olds on their knowledge of personal finances and ability to apply it to their financial problems. This will be the first large-scale international study to assess the financial literacy of young people.[1]
