Main Progress Initiatives

Sustainable Development Policy Institute

SDPI was founded in August 1992 on the recommendation of the Pakistan National Conservation Strategy (NCS), also called Pakistan’s Agenda 21. The NCS placed Pakistan’s socio-economic development within the context of a national environmental plan.

Its mandate consists in advising Pakistan's government from a broad multi-disciplinary perspective and promoting the application of sustainable development-based laws among others. Pakistan's Sustainable Development Policy Institute serves as a forum for policy-dialogue at the national and regional level and as an environment for information dissemination and training.

Multidimensional Poverty Index

The Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) for Pakistan is 0.264. The MPI is an international measure of acute poverty covering 109 countries. The MPI reflects the multiple deprivations that poor people face at the same time in three dimensions: health, education and living standards. The MPI reflects both the incidence or headcount ratio (H) of poverty – the proportion of the population that is multidimensionally poor – and the average intensity (A) of their poverty – the average proportion of indicators in which poor people are deprived. More information on the MPI in Pakistan is available here.
