Background
Gross National Happiness USA (GNHUSA) formed the Gross National Happiness American Project in 2009. This project was born following the founders' participation in the 4th International Gross National Happiness Conference in Thimphu, Bhutan.
GNHUSA bases it's American adaptation of Gross National Happiness on the "inalienable right" of "life liberty, and the pursuit of happiness" as granted to the people of the United States in the Declaration of Independence. GNHUSA also considers very important the Declaration of Independence of Bhutan of 2008 which pledges to "secure the blessings of liberty, to ensure justice and tranquility and to enhance the unity, happiness and well being of the people for all time."
GNHUSA envisions a happy and ecologically sustainable future. GNHUSA seeks to mobilize individuals and organizations in the United States to shift beliefs, policies, and practices concerning progress and well-being toward the pursuit of genuine happiness.
About
Starting on the state-level scale in Vermont where it was founded, GNHUSA is "investigating how to involve Vermonters in adopting surveys of well-being and developing a set of indicators, based on best practices that can be used to guide our transition to a healthy, happy and sustainable future."
The Four Pillars of GNH
- the promotion of equitable and sustainable socio-economic development
- the preservation and promotion of cultural values
- the conservation of the natural environment, and
- the establishment of good governance. [1]
Events
- In June 2010, GNHUSA held the conference "GNH2010: Changing What we Measure from Wealth to Well-Being!", with experts from Bhutan, Brazil, Canada and the United States participating.
