About
Green Sundays, the informal get-together blending environmental issues with the arts is back in 2011. Join NEF on Sunday, 13th February, 2011 for a special film screening and discussion exploring economic growth at Evolve in South Kensington.
Presented in collaboration with the new economics foundation and CEECEC, the films on view explore the way our society is based on ‘growth’ – the notion that more money, more goods and more services are needed by us all to lead fulfilling lives.
But the financial meltdown of 2008 and the subsequent recession has shaken belief in the power of the pound. Coupled with climate change and globalisation many are starting to wonder if “indefinite growth is sustainable?” Are we being led into an environmental and social catastrophe? And is there anything we can do about it?
Come along to see informative films, hear inspirational speakers and discover practical solutions. All welcome.
Programme
5:00pm Short Film -Life After Growth, 2010 (25 mins)
- Directed, written, shot and edited by Leah Temper & Claudia Medina
The economic crash of 2008 revealed not only the frailty and vulnerability of the economic system, it also showed the false basis that the growth economy is built on – the financial bubble grows bigger and crashes bigger, but we don’t seem to be getting any happier. The prescription from mainstream economists is more growth – but is this just taking more of what ails us? Has growth become unsustainable? Is there another way?
5:35 Main Feature -Economics of Happiness, (67 mins)
-A film by Helena Norberg-Hodge, Steven Gorelick & John Page.
Our world is moving simultaneously in two opposing directions. On one hand, the alliance between governments and big business continues to promote globalisation and consolidation of corporate power. And on the other, people all over the world are resisting those policies. Communities are coming together to re-build more human-scale, ecological economies based on a new paradigm – the economics of localisation. www.theeconomicsofhappiness.org
