The event will be held on Wednesday, 25th May 2011 at 6 pm for a 6.30 pm start, in the prestigious surroundings of the Royal Institute for International Affairs at 10 St James's Square, London, SW1Y 4LE.

The Global Peace Index (GPI) is a ground-breaking piece of research in the study of peace, which not only ranks countries by their peacefulness but also seeks to identify the drivers of peace. Since its inception, the Index has been endorsed by a number of high profile figures including Archbishop Desmond Tutu and Mr. Kofi Annan. The aim of the Index is to better understand the determinants or “drivers” that create or sustain peace.

The Index is published by the Institute for Economics and Peace, a global think tank dedicated to the research and education of the relationship between economics, business and peace. It is collated and calculated by the Economist Intelligence Unit. Comprised of a range of indicators, the Index takes into consideration both internal and external factors influencing the peacefulness of countries. Factors measured include the levels of violent crime, political stability and military expenditure, which are correlated against a number of social development indicators such as corruption, freedom of the press and school enrolment ratio.

Presenting this year’s Index, will be Steve Kililea, Founder Global Peace Index, he will be joined on the panel by Dr. Robin Bew, Editorial Director & Chief Economist of the Economist Intelligence Unit. This year’s panel session will focus on social sustainability, and further speakers will be announced in due course. Following the panel, guests will be invited to submit questions. Opening remarks will be made by Dr Robin Niblett, Director of the Royal Institute of International Affairs at Chatham House.
