About

The Bertelsmann Stiftung is a German foundation by Reinhard Mohn in 1977. The foundation is politically independent and dedicated to "service the society through work based on the conviction that competition and civic engagement are essential for social progress." The aim of the foundation is to "identify social problems and challenges at an early stage and develop exemplary solutions to address them."[1]

The foundation only carries out its own project work but collaborates often for specific projects with national agencies and international organisations, NGOs as well other foundations.

Projects and Publications

On the topic of education, the Bertelsmann Stiftung produced the European Lifelong Learning Indicators (ELLI).

The Sustainable Governance Indicators (SGI) is a cross-national survey of governance for OECD countries identifying reform needs.THE SGI is also a Correspondent of Wikiprogress.

The Bertelsmann Stiftung's Transformation Index BTI is an international ranking of 128 developing and transition countries that measures political management and progress on the way to democracy and a market economy.
