Main Initiatives

Observatory on Sustainability in Spain

The Observatory on Sustainability in Spain (OSE) is an independent organization that was set up in 2005 as the result of a collaboration agreement between the Spanish Ministry of the Environment, Rural and Marine Affairs, the Biodiversity Foundation (Fundación Biodiversidad) and Alcalá University’s General Foundation.

In Spain, the OSE aims to become a reference centre that rigorously collects, processes and assesses basic information on sustainability-related issues concerning Spain (current situation, trends and future scenarios).

It publishes an assessment of sustainable development in Spain every year.[1] The last report published was for 2011 and is available (in Spanish) here: http://www.sostenibilidad-es.org/es/indicadores?field_anyo_value_many_to_one=2011

Catalonia's Strategy for Sustainable Development

The Strategy for Sustainable Development of Catalonia with the horizon 2026 is the road map that sets the lines and key strategic objectives to ensure the transition of Catalonia towards a safe, eco-efficient and low carbon-emission place. This goal is supposed to be reached through efficient resource consumption and a minimization of adverse impacts on health and the environment in Catalonia.

Fundacion Valores

Fundación Valores is a non-profit organization, consisting of a global network of professionals actively engaged in the development of sustainable measures and innovative politics which aim to ensure the creation of a just, sustainable and peaceful society. Fundación Valores is affiliated with the Earth Charter Initiatives[2].

Social Barometer of Spain

The Social Barometer of Spain is a continuous assessment of the social situation of Spain, developed by Colectivo Ioé and supported by Centro de Investigación para la Paz-Peace Research Center (CIP-Ecosocial). It proposes a system of 180 social indicators, all from official sources, and synthetic indexes transparently developed by the authors and open to an active intervention for all users. The indexes correspond to eleven social spheres and are supposed to offer a global vision of important questions related to welfare.

The Spanish Initiative and the OECD-hosted Global Project on Measuring the Progress of Societies

Aim

Spain is now participating in the OECD-hosted Global Project on Measuring the Progress of Societies. With its own initiative, Spain joins the extensive network of partners who share the common aim of measuring progress and the quality of life from a different standpoint than that provided by traditional economic measures.

Co-ordination of the project

The Project in Spain has been led, in its preliminary stage, by the Spanish Delegation at the OECD with a coordinating group comprising the National Statistics Institute (INE), the Economic Office of the President (OEP), the Spanish Chapter of the Club of Rome (CECoR) and the Observatory on Sustainability in Spain (OSE).

Constitution of the Spanish National Roundtable

Following the presentation of the project in Barcelona in May 2009, a National Roundtable was set up to help society discuss, assess and put forward alternative choices based on Spain’s own situation.

Instruments for carrying out the project: Working Groups, Digital Communication Platform, Citizen Survey and Scientific Committee

Working Group 1: Economic measurements of well-being and updated macroeconomic indicators, led by the National Statistics Institute (INE).
Working Group 2: The social dimension and the different measures for assessing it, led by the Spanish Chapter of the Club of Rome (CECoR).
Working Group 3: Environmental sustainability and global co-operation, led by the Observatory on Sustainability in Spain (OSE).

UNDP Human Development Trends 2011

The Human Development Index provides a composite measure of three basic dimensions of human development: health, education and income. According to the United Nations Development Programme's Human Development Report 2011 Spain's HDI is 0.878, which gives the country a rank of 23 out of 187 countries with comparable data. The HDI of OECD as a region increased from 0.749 in 1980 to 0.873 today, placing Spain above the regional average[3].

Spain's HDI can be broken down as follows:

Happiness in Spain

This is an overview of findings on Happiness in Spain. The available findings are presented in the latest ‘Nation Report’ on Spain [1]. This report is ordered by type of happiness questions and within these types by year. This ordering is designed to facilitate the assessment of progress; comparison over time arguably is most fruitful when the same questions are used.
The report presents means and standard deviations, both on the original scale range and transformed to a common range 0-10. The mean gives an idea of the level of happiness in the country, while the standard deviation indicate the level of inequality of happiness.
Links provide more detail about the precise text of the question, the full distribution of responses and technical details of the survey. The report is continuously updated.
