Demographics

Afghanistan is located in Southern Asia, in the north and west of Pakistan, east of Iran.It has borders with China for 76 km, Iran for Pakistan for 2430 km, 936 km, Tajikistan for 1206 km, Turkmenistan for 744 km and Uzbekistan for 137 km. Land in Afghanistan is frequently rugged mountains; plains in north and southwest.Afghan land covers an area of 647 500 km²

UNDP Development Report Trends

The Human Development Index is a composite index measuring average achievement in three basic dimensions of human development- a long healthy life, knowledge, and a decent standard of living; intended to capture the essential dimensions of the quality of human life or human development. According to the United Nations Development Programme's Human Development Report, Afghanistan’s HDI value for 2011 is 0.398—in the low human development category—positioning the country at 172 out of 187 countries and territories. Between 1980 and 2011, Afghanistan’s HDI value increased from 0.198 to 0.398, an increase of 101.0 per cent or average annual increase of about 2.3 per cent.

Happiness in Afghanistan

This is an overview of findings on Happiness in Afghanistan.The available findings are presented in the latest ‘Nation Report’ on Afghanistan [1]. This report is ordered by type of happiness questions and within these types by year. This ordering is to facilitate the assessment of progress, comparison over time being most fruitful using the same questions.
The report presents means and standard deviations, both on the original scale range and transformed to a common range 0-10. The means inform about the level of happiness in the country and the standard deviations about inequality of happiness.
Links provide more detail about the precise text of the question, the full distribution of responses and technical details of the survey. The report is continuously updated.'

"Visualizing Afghanistan"

To accompany the broadest and most comprehensive public opinion poll of Afghan citizens, Afghanistan in 2011: A Survey of the Afghan People, The Asia Foundation launched an interactive mapping platform and data visualization site, Data site, "Visualizing Afghanistan: A Survey of the Afghan People". Through Visualizing Afghanistan, the Foundation is making its Afghan survey data available and downloadable to researchers and the public to use and republish.
